A Brunswick man facing capital murder charges has been appointed the same defense attorney who represented Steven Cepec in his capital murder trial.
James Tench, 28, faces charges of aggravated murder, murder, aggravated robbery, kidnapping and evidence tampering. If convicted, he could be sentenced to the death penalty.
He’s accused of killing his mother, Mary Tench, in November with “prior calculation and design” while trying to rob and restrain her.
At a Thursday hearing before Medina County Common Pleas Judge James L. Kimbler, Kerry O’Brien was appointed to represent Tench, who’s in prison until 2019 for an armed robbery in Strongsville.
O’Brien was one of two attorneys who represented Cepec in last year’s capital murder case.
Cepec, 45, was sentenced to death in April 2013 for beating 73-year-old Frank Munz to death with the claw-end of a hammer and strangling him with a lamp cord during a home invasion on June 3, 2010, in Chatham Township. Cepec is on death row at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution.
