A Cleveland Heights man who pleaded no contest Tuesday to trying to kill a man at Medina’s Union Square apartments also faces charges in Cuyahoga County.
Gregory Prince, 22, who’s awaiting sentencing in Medina County on charges of attempted murder and felonious assault, was charged in Cuyahoga County with carrying concealed weapons and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle.
In both cases, he’s also charged with a gun specification that indicates he wielded a weapon while committing an offense. The specification makes prison time mandatory, according to Ohio Revised Code.
Prince was indicted in August 2013 in the Cuyahoga County case, according to court records, but did not show up for court proceedings this year.
A warrant was issued for his arrest on April 17 — two days after the shooting in Medina, according to the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post.
A spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office did not return calls for comment.
In the Medina County case, Prince was on trial Monday and Tuesday for trying to kill 32-year-old Jose Algarin with a gunshot to the head. Algarin survived because the gun malfunctioned, meaning the bullet got lodged in his skull but never penetrated the bone.
Prince’s attorney, Stephen Hanudel, told the jury his client shot Algarin because Prince knew Algarin had a criminal history and was worried about his own safety.
After a day of witness testimony, Prince changed his plea to no contest.
The judge will sentence Prince in four to six weeks. No date has yet been set.
